Maximizing Casino Uptime: How Jake’s 58 Bypassed IT Disruption to Keep Video Lottery Terminals Running
UPDATE: Suffolk OTB has since revealed that a technical issue with the casino operations surveillance system, which monitors everything from floor security to the integrity of the video lottery terminals, was the cause of the temporary shutdown.

Jake’s 58 Casino Hotel, located on New York’s Long Island, has resumed its gaming activities after an unexpected disruption to its IT system caused an operational halt. This incident, which occurred on June 4, 2025, left the facility’s 1,000 gaming machines shuttered.

Shortly after staff reported the malfunctioning of the video lottery terminals (VLTs), the facility temporarily closed. They communicated on social media that technicians were addressing the issue. Customers expected a quick resolution; however, the reopening timeline was initially set for 5 PM but extended to 8 PM and eventually pushed to just before 11 PM. Now, Jake’s Casino operates daily from 8 AM until 4 AM.
Background on the IT Disruption
This is not the first incident for Jake’s 58 Casino. In 2023, the casino experienced another operational halt due to a cyberattack affecting the New York State Gaming Commission’s central VLT system, which rendered many of the gaming machines inoperable. This time, however, the exact details surrounding the current IT disruption have not been elaborated upon by the management.
Phil Boyle, president of Suffolk Regional Off-Track Betting Corp. (Suffolk OTB), stated that normal operations have resumed and shared the casino’s appreciation for guest patience: “We are pleased to share that Jake’s 58 is now open and fully operational. Yesterday, we unexpectedly closed for part of the day to restore a necessary casino system. Our team acted quickly, and all systems are back online and functioning as normal. We thank our guests for their understanding, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back today for a great experience at Jake’s 58,” Boyle said.
Revenue and Gaming Operations
Jake’s 58 Casino, like other VLT casinos in New York, retains around 46% of the gross gaming revenue produced by their terminals, putting a significant portion toward public education. Another 10% is allocated to operating costs associated with the systems. Instead of switching to full-fledged slot machines by applying for a casino license, they are opting instead for a significant facility expansion that includes:
- Doubling the gaming floor size and VLT positions to 2,000.
- A new 17,500-square-foot VIP lounge and entertainment area.
- Complete renovations of all 210 hotel guest rooms.
- A new parking structure to accommodate 500 vehicles.
- A 3,500-square-foot events center and a 200-seat food court.
This ambitious project is valued at around $210 million, with completion expected by spring of the following year.
Conclusion
Jake’s 58 has faced challenges due to IT disruptions in the past, but their proactive measures and rapid return to service demonstrate their commitment to guest satisfaction. With exciting expansions underway, the casino aims to enhance the gaming experience and attract more patrons in the future. Stay tuned for further updates as this highly valued entertainment venue continues to develop.
