This massive operation, which spanned multiple jurisdictions through the distribution of illicit gaming devices, comes on the heels of a previous incident where he mistakenly posted a crime scene photo of a deceased teenager on social media.

According to prosecutors, this operation was active from 2019 until at least early 2024. It is claimed that from mid-2022 onward, Lopez and four associates were directly involved with managing the club, deriving significant profits from these illegal activities.

The sheriff is accused of using his political position to protect the interests of the gambling operation, which included personal enrichment through cash payouts as well as campaign contributions.

Four others—Ying Zhang, Sharon Fedrick, Sheldon Wetherholt, and Carol Cote—were also indicted on similar charges of racketeering and conspiracy. Fedrick and Cote have remained in custody without bond following their arrests.
