Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has also hinted at the potential for further charges against Lopez and his associates.

The sheriff is accused of using his political position to protect the interests of the gambling operation, which included personal enrichment through cash payouts as well as campaign contributions.

Four others—Ying Zhang, Sharon Fedrick, Sheldon Wetherholt, and Carol Cote—were also indicted on similar charges of racketeering and conspiracy. Fedrick and Cote have remained in custody without bond following their arrests.
