The identification of human remains recovered from the Mississippi River in Missouri three years ago links the deceased to a specific casino location: Caesars Southern Indiana, where the man was last seen in 2022, a distance of 350 miles away.
The New Madrid County Sheriff’s Office announced that DNA testing had confirmed the remains belonged to Robert J. Eaton, 26, of Louisville, Ky. Eaton was reported missing by his family in February 2022 after he failed to return home from the casino, which is located directly across the Ohio River from Louisville.
After his disappearance, law enforcement officers scoured the southern Indiana and nearby Louisville region, but they were unsuccessful in locating him.
No Signs of Trauma
Approximately four months later, in Portageville, Mo., deputies from the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Office pulled a body from the Mississippi River. The deceased was described as a white male between the ages of 19 and 20, standing about 5’10”. The body was estimated to have been in the river for a minimum of two to three months, with no signs of trauma noted, according to the sheriff’s office.
Beyond that, investigators had little to work with initially and were unable to determine the identity of this John Doe. That was until they sought the assistance of Southeast Missouri State University, who consulted on the case.
University forensic technicians were able to deploy advanced forensic genetic genealogy techniques to uncover close DNA matches. Investigators then observed that possible relatives of the John Doe had posted on social media about a missing loved one matching the profile of the body.
Eaton’s family travelled to Missouri on May 30 to identify and collect the remains.
“They assured us that they are finally at peace, and they took comfort in the knowledge that this case has opened the door to new investigative techniques that will revolutionise case handling in New Madrid County,” Sheriff Joey Higgerson stated.
What Happened to Eaton?
However, questions remain regarding how the body ended up in the Mississippi River, approximately 350 miles away from the casino. It is theoretically possible for a body to enter the Ohio River in Elizabeth, Ind., and be carried downstream to the Mississippi River in Portageville, but this would be a highly unusual occurrence. The body would have to travel about 700 miles to reach the confluence of the Ohio with the Mississippi at Cairo, Ill., and then an additional 50 miles or so to Portageville.
After spending several days in the water, gases from decomposition cause a body to float, meaning it would likely become visible to boaters, commercial traffic, or patrols on the heavily trafficked river, which has several locks and dams.
Authorities have confirmed that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Eaton’s disappearance is ongoing.
